A silent tide is sweeping across the country among family men of a certain age. Men who’ve decided that they are done living on the government’s terms, shrugging off the tight-fitting version of suburban success with an ease they never thought possible. They’re walking off the reservation on their own terms, without anyone taking slightest bit of notice.
These men don’t show up at Tea Party rallies, march on Washington or join militias. They go to work, love their wives, pay their never-ending taxes, fees, surcharges and diligently raise the next responsible generation. Most people would call these solid men our nation’s backbone.
Many have served our country, in war zones, with distinguished honor. They gladly earn their bread while supporting complete strangers who don’t, can’t or won’t work. They span the spectrum from blue collar workers to successful entrepreneurs. A number of these good men have been sniffing the wind for the past two years and they’re calling it a day. Bolt holes are being created, money is being transferred out of the market and into solid commodities, debt load is being reduced with an eye towards further economic collapse. Politics have become meaningless to this breed, they’re done, disgusted, fed up with whole cesspool. These men are looking at American life in a whole new way.
Property is being bought on the edge of small towns, small tracts of rural acreage in conservative counties. Old houses are being remodeled, small houses are being built. A smaller footprint is being purposely crafted. Off the grid, a new conservative form of green, has been embraced with deep fervor. Wells, solar panels, windmills, rain barrels, compost toilets and septic systems are the order of the day. Anything to fly under the government’s creeping hand is welcomed to the table.
Large gardens are being planted, the fading skills of canning are being embraced. Chickens, goats and the occasional pig are living in their newly erected barns. Organic methods of treating the land or raising livestock are embraced as cost-effective alternatives to expensive chemicals. Buying in bulk resonates on a deeper level and sustainable living has taken on a whole new meaning for these traditional men now facing middle age in our country’s massively regulated and rapidly changing landscape.
These men are rediscovering their tool boxes with enthusiasm. Fixing, building and creating this brave new world satisfies their craving for competent simplicity. They don’t want to rely on anyone else, self-sufficiency and mastery of old skills fit their newly independent skins, many hope to take their emerging craftsmanship commercial, if their worst fears come to pass.
Guns have always been a part of the vernacular for these particular men. Time spent at the lease, on far-flung hunting trips or at the range define who they are at the most fundamental level. These men shoot well and take pleasure in their firearms, they take serious pride in their wide knowledge and responsible handling of weapons. Fearing onerous legislation from the current ruling congress, they reasonably stocked up on guns and ammunition with no intention of ever sparking an insurrection. Hunting game as a sustainable food stuff has become a keen topic of discussion, shooting at the Feds or agitating for secession holds no appeal at all.
Flying under the radar, getting out from under the yoke, becoming free men, rather than shackled dogs or besuited grey ghosts, is the juice fueling their passion. These men don’t want to argue politics and they have no interest in fighting, not anymore.
These men have decided that what they want most of all, is to finally start living.

“You take off your insignia. Escape
is just a simple matter
of melting into the landscape.”
Exactly.
That is really well written and certainly makes one think.
I understand the mindset your describing here and I feel I have one foot in that lifestyle. Veteran, residence in the country, livestock, large garden. But I can’t seem to turn off the outside world. I feel we must continue to fight the good fight using politics and the ballot box. The cause of freedom needs these brave men you are describing now more than ever. I am glad that Washington, Adams, Hamilton, and Franklin didn’t shrug their shoulders and decide to simply disappear in the face of British tyranny. If we allow Marxism to win then we have lost everything. And the regime will find these good men attempting to hide sooner or later.
If there is a total collapse of society then these free men shall fair better than most and prove the wisdom of their actions. But, if things continue the way they are going now we must either make a stand or I’ll see you all in the camps.
I’ve kept insisting this was going to happen. While I talked and insisted, others acted. Bless them all.
If you live in Pennsylvania, “they” know who you are. Head for Kansas or all points west.
The hub has wanted for years to move somewhere utterly remote and with a tiny population. I would go but I do agree with DJ in that the only way you change things is to stay a part of them. And you can only hide for so long – eventually the long arm of the state will find these men and their families – unless they keep fighting it.
DJ said “But, if things continue the way they are going now we must either make a stand or I’ll see you all in the camps.”
Exactly, and there are too many of them to ignore by doing the back to the country bit. If the SHTF and there is a major collapse, the self sufficient will be overrun in no time. I think our best bet is to take the government back with as little force as possible. The Teaparties are a good sign, but if they are ignored or suppressed we may be into an “Unintended Consequences” sort of situation. I’ve heard that only 3% of the original colonists took up arms against the British – surely there are more of us that still believe in the Constitution now.
Hey, Hunt, nice to see your intelligent face again.
I’m going to tell you what I really think, because that’s just what I do.
The tea party is officially controlled by GOP flacks, the people showing up in the streets are the real deal, but the big tent folks controlling the media and the talking points for this “new people’s movement” are most definitely manipulated by a few well orchestrated, well funded, politically entrenched operatives and PACS.
As I’ve said before, it’s wonderful to see so many conservative minded people take a fervent interest in government policies.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of baseline Tea Party people will continue to be persuaded to vote for the Scott Browns of the world and against their own best interests.
Not a damn thing will change because most of these activists are still too GOP party oriented to vote outside the box. We are talking about mainstream, normal conservatives who finally got pissed off enough to take to the streets. They still feel uncomfortable with more libertarian minded candidates and aren’t ready to consider another of way of doing business outside of our federal grid.
By the way, I wouldn’t bet on these dropouts opting out of a serious fight to preserve their new found freedom. I think I mentioned more than a few times that they consider themselves to be men.
Nicole, it’s not about hiding for these folks. They’re just changing perspective.
Daphne’s got it right. We’re not hiding. We understand what is going on. We’re changing our perspective. Yes, we’re men – and women. There are a lot of us. And we’re not worried about being overrun.
It appears that the men you describe are only seeking to find a life where each day is not a war against malice, and nothing more.
But if the day comes that the provocation is unbearable, we will be shocked at how easily the left collapses. They are safe while hidden in gradualism, but not when exposed in confidence.
Northern Maine. Beautiful land for<1000.00 an acre. Good country people.
Far as you can go east.
Lovely place.
Thanks for this one, Ms. Daphne!
It’s nice to know either that I’m not totally ’round the bend, or if I am, that I’m in fine company.
I’m not there, but I understand the sentiment. Like you, Daphne, I woke up to the fact that the Republicans no more represent me than do the Dems. With no realistic third choice, the only thing left is to stop giving a shit.
I’m not there, yet, but the youngest graduates High School in two years.
Daphne,
I was really hoping that maybe the Teaparty crew could resist the GOP, but maybe you’re right and it’s too late. Against this possibility I have heard a lot of people are gunning up and Judy and I are certainly going to look into CC permits – or a move to Arizona. (My Ruger Old Army is a bit obvious and very slow to reload)
I did the “back to the land” bit in the seventies – homestead, garden, the whole works, but even on an island it is near impossible to be totally self sufficient and gets boring as well.
The rush on ammo and guns after the one was elected makes me think that the Republic may not go quietly. Outfits like the Oathkeepers and the JFPO http://www.jpfo.org/index.htm give me hope as well. We certainly live in interesting times.
As they are men, I do realize they will fight when it comes down to it. Nothing at all wrong with working for the best but being prepared for the worst.

Oh, and I meant to say this earlier, well written as usual, Daphne.
Should have noted that many of those I know who fit this bill are most emphatically not “dropping out” and removing themselves from society, either. We’re here, we’re involved, and we’re all around you.
Claire Wolfe of the late lamented Wolfesblog, had a long running series about a fictitious place called Hardyville into which some people had just disappeared. I highly recommend the series to you. I kept thinking of The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress every time I read it.
I’ll be lazy and repost my American Digest post:
What those worried about “going Galt” should know is that this will expand the underground economy, which interacts with the visible economy all the time. When you also consider that 12-20 million illegals have formed their own communities under our noses, there’s no reason to expect that “Galts” wouldn’t do the same. Take into account the democratization of certain manufacturing and product development technologies***, and people can have clandestine, high-tech “Machiladoras” on the North side of the border, producing actual durable goods that actual people will buy under the table, and, suddenly, this approach does make sense. It would be a phenomenon the greater society would eventually have to reckon with.
Another thing is: if we have enough people going this route (the tipping point may be, ironically, numbers similar to the illegals), those “Galts” will find that they may have to fight for their way of life after all. OR, they may find that even larger chunks of society will chose to emulate them with impunity, or simply tolerate them as a useful alternative lifestyle.
***Affordable 3-D modeling technologies; being able to manufacture customized products — up to and including automobiles, but also including things like i-Pod knock-offs, etc. — for reasonable prices. An “Army of Davids” approach to decentralized industrialization.
I can almost hear the men all singing this:
They will fight. But only as a last resort.
Old Salt said;
“We’re here, we’re involved, and we’re all around you.”
I like that a lot! I might add that most of us know what we’re doing and we’ve got the tools and know how to use them.
We’ve been here all along, even here in the Northern Bay Area of California. We’ll be making sausage again this weekend…garden is planted…ammo is stocked.
And there are many more of us than the lefties would have you believe.
Do you remember high school, when the big loud team would take the field during warm-ups before the game, shouting out in cadence as they did their cute exercises, growling and looking all mean and nasty…while the other team quietly warmed up, saying nothing, not reacting…and then proceeded to have a 35-point lead over the loudmouths by halftime, going on to win by over 63 points?
Guys, I have no doubt that the men I wrote about are more than prepared to handle anything thrown their way.
I also don’t doubt their willingness to make a stand if the day ever comes.
I do think that they’re damn tired of all the social and government B.S. getting pilled on their capable shoulders.
I know that y’all are solid.
I have been ambivalent about the tea party. I am not agin ‘em, mind you, but I think placards and large gatherings are the impotent methods of the left. When we of the massively unaligned malignment do something, we think Detroit…we simply get up and go elsewhere. Look at what has become of Detroit. It is a lesson to the rest of the country.
I hate to be the one to say it but…there is only one cure and it does, indeed, demand one check out of the game.
Stop feeding the beast. Without the tender, they have no plays left.
I don’t know when that tipping point will be reached but it cannot be much longer. And that is when the screws will be turned, which makes being prepared all the more important.
Not to say that they’ll let you go easily…but at least you have afforded yourself a choice.
Good article!
I am at heart like the men you describe. 25 years military, have the skills to a house from the ground up, built all our furniture, pretty good physicist also.
I’m pretty young (late 50′s) but in a wheelchair now from bad spine. Have terminal cancer but still pretty strong.
I would do what you are talking about if I could. However, I can’t so if it all falls apart and the barbarians come to the door, I’ll at least take a few of them with me. That will be a few less for you guys to deal with. And I know you will deal with them. America may not make it through all this. Doesn’t really matter. Names change, people change. But if you can kept the idea, and the reality, of free men and women, controlling their own lives and building a better world for their childern, and better doesn’t mean perfect, just better than what you had to face, you will have won.
Get ready. I think you are going to need to be. Good luck.
God bless you, Garyp, and thank you for your military service.

Great post and comments. Good to see so many patriots.
The TEA Party may have been infiltrated and the national elections may be corrupted by amnesty and other methods but if we each focus on winning our states back, we can at least have a point of leverage against the machine, check out the http://www.tenthamenedmentcenter.com
